The Loretto Chapel Staircase: Miracle, Mystery, or Masterpiece?

A view from below the Loretto Chapel staircase

In the quiet city of Santa Fe stands the beautiful and historic Loretto Chapel—a modest Gothic-style structure that holds within it one of the most enduring architectural mysteries in American history. What began as a simple design oversight would soon evolve into a story that blurs the line between faith, folklore, and unexplained ingenuity.

When the chapel was completed in 1878, it was celebrated for its elegance and craftsmanship. But admiration quickly gave way to concern when it was discovered that a crucial element had been overlooked: there was no access to the choir loft, which rose approximately twenty-two feet above the main floor. The space was too confined for a conventional staircase, and local carpenters—experienced and practical—offered a blunt conclusion: it couldn’t be done. The only solution, they insisted, was a ladder.

For the Sisters of Loretto, this was unacceptable. A ladder was neither practical nor dignified for daily use during worship. Faced with a seemingly impossible problem, the Sisters turned not to engineering—but to faith. They began a novena, nine days of devoted prayer, to Saint Joseph, asking for guidance and a solution.

According to legend, on the ninth and final day of prayer, their answer arrived.

A quiet, unassuming man appeared at the chapel, accompanied only by a donkey and a simple set of tools. He asked if there was work to be done. The Sisters, believing their prayers had been answered, welcomed him and explained their dilemma. Without hesitation, the man agreed to take on the task.

He worked alone

For months, the mysterious carpenter labored in near silence, rarely seen and never requesting assistance. There were no elaborate tools, no visible plans, and no clear indication of how he intended to solve a problem that had stumped every other craftsman. Then, one morning, the work was complete.

What stood before the Sisters was nothing short of astonishing.

A graceful, spiraling staircase rose from the chapel floor to the choir loft—elegant, compact, and unlike anything they had imagined possible. It featured two full 360-degree turns, rising roughly 20 feet in just 33 steps. Most astonishing of all, it appeared to have no central support column, no visible means of structural reinforcement, and—at least initially—no railing. Even more curious, it was constructed without the use of nails, relying instead on wooden pegs and intricate joinery.

But the mystery deepened

When the Sisters went to thank the carpenter and offer payment, he was gone. No one had seen him leave. No name had been given. He had simply vanished, leaving behind only the staircase—and a growing sense of wonder.

Over time, the staircase itself became an object of fascination not only for the faithful, but for architects, engineers, and skeptics alike. How could such a structure stand without visible support? How had it been built in such a confined space? And perhaps most puzzling—where had the materials come from?

The wood used in the staircase did not match any species native to the region around Santa Fe. Later analysis suggested it was a type of spruce more commonly found in distant climates, possibly as far away as Alaska or even Europe. In the late 19th century, transporting such materials to the remote Southwest would have been no small feat, adding yet another layer to the mystery.

Decades later, efforts were made to separate legend from fact. In 1984, historian Mary J. Straw Cook published Loretto: The Seven Sisters and Their Santa Fe Chapel, in which she presented evidence that may point to a real craftsman behind the work. Among her findings was a receipt dated 1881, indicating payment to a man named Francois Rochas for wood.

Further research uncovered a local newspaper article reporting that Rochas had been tragically murdered in his home. The same article identified him as the builder of the chapel’s staircase. According to Cook, Rochas may have traveled to the United States specifically for this project, even importing specialized wood from France to complete it.

His final resting place can be found at the Our Lady of the Light Catholic Cemetery—a quiet and unassuming grave that offers few answers to a story filled with questions.

And yet, even with this possible explanation, the mystery endures.

Was the staircase truly the work of a highly skilled—but ultimately human—craftsman whose story became mythologized over time? Or was there something more at play, as the Sisters believed—a divine intervention, delivered through the hands of a stranger who appeared only when he was needed most?

The fascination with the staircase has only grown over the years, inspiring books, investigations, and even the 1998 film The Staircase, which dramatizes the legend and its lingering questions.

In the end, the true power of the Loretto staircase may not lie in how it was built—but in the fact that, even now, no single explanation seems to fully account for its existence.

Space Weather Might Be Hiding Alien Messages

March 12, 2026 in Extraterrestrial, Science & Technology

For decades, scientists have scanned the cosmos for a whisper from another civilization somewhere among the stars. Massive radio telescopes sweep the skies every night, listening for patterns that don’t belong to nature.

But what if the message is already out there…

…and we simply can’t hear it?

A growing number of astronomers are exploring a fascinating possibility that space weather might be scrambling or hiding alien communications before they ever reach Earth.

The Problem With Listening to the Universe

Projects searching for extraterrestrial intelligence—often grouped under the field of Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI)—work by monitoring radio waves from distant stars.

The logic is simple:

  • Intelligent civilizations may use radio signals to communicate.
  • Radio waves travel extremely long distances through space.
  • With sensitive enough instruments, we might detect them.

Facilities like the Allen Telescope Array in California constantly scan thousands of star systems for unusual signals.

Occasionally, scientists detect something intriguing—bursts or patterns that briefly look artificial. But almost every time, the signal fades, distorts, or disappears before researchers can confirm its origin.

Why?

One possible answer lies in space weather.

What Exactly Is Space Weather?

When people hear “weather,” they think of clouds, rain, or storms on Earth.

But space has its own version.

Space weather refers to energetic activity from stars, especially our Sun. This includes:

  • Solar flares
  • Coronal mass ejections (huge eruptions of plasma)
  • Streams of charged particles called solar wind
  • Turbulent magnetic fields traveling through space

These events can travel millions of miles across the solar system.

When they reach Earth, they can:

  • Disrupt satellites
  • Interfere with radio communications
  • Trigger spectacular auroras

But the same disturbances can also distort radio waves traveling through space.

A Cosmic Game of Telephone

Imagine trying to hear someone whisper across a crowded stadium during a thunderstorm.

That’s roughly what it’s like to detect signals from another star system.

Between us and any potential alien civilization lies a chaotic sea of plasma, radiation, and magnetic turbulence. When radio waves pass through these regions, several things can happen:

  • Scattering – the signal spreads out and weakens
  • Distortion – the message becomes warped
  • Delay – parts of the signal arrive at different times
  • Complete masking – the signal disappears into background noise

By the time the transmission reaches Earth, it may look like nothing more than static.

The Universe Is Much Noisier Than We Thought

Astronomers studying mysterious phenomena like Fast Radio Bursts have already discovered that space can dramatically alter signals traveling through it.

Fast radio bursts are extremely powerful pulses from distant galaxies that last only milliseconds. Yet even these intense signals arrive on Earth distorted and stretched by interstellar plasma.

If such powerful bursts can be warped this way, imagine what could happen to a deliberate alien transmission that might be far weaker.

Some scientists now wonder if extraterrestrial messages could be hidden inside cosmic noise, their patterns scrambled by stellar storms long before we detect them.

Could We Decode a Scrambled Alien Message?

The idea sounds like science fiction, but researchers are starting to explore ways to overcome the problem.

Possible solutions include:

1. AI signal analysis
Machine learning systems could scan huge amounts of radio data looking for hidden patterns buried inside noise.

2. Multi-telescope observations
Observing the same signal with multiple telescopes around the world may help reconstruct distorted transmissions.

3. New signal correction models
Scientists are developing better ways to reverse the effects of plasma distortion on radio waves.

Ironically, the breakthrough in detecting alien signals may not come from finding stronger transmissions—but from learning how to clean up cosmic interference.

The Possibility That Changes Everything

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence has always faced one haunting question:

What if no one is out there?

But the idea that space weather might be hiding alien signals introduces a completely different possibility:

What if they’ve already tried to contact us…

…and their message has been lost in the cosmic storm?

If that’s true, the universe may not be silent after all.

We might simply be listening through too much static.

The Ocean’s Dark Secrets: 7 Mysteries Scientists Still Can’t Explain

March 9, 2026 in Uncategorized

More than 80% of Earth’s oceans remain unexplored, making the deep sea one of the last true frontiers on our planet. Beneath the surface lies a vast world of crushing pressure, freezing temperatures, and total darkness—conditions so extreme that even our most advanced technology struggles to operate there.

Despite decades of research, scientists continue to encounter strange phenomena that defy simple explanation. From mysterious sounds echoing through the depths to enormous creatures rarely seen by human eyes, the ocean still guards countless secrets.

Here are seven ocean mysteries that scientists still can’t fully explain.

1. The Bloop: The Loudest Sound Ever Recorded Underwater

In 1997, underwater microphones placed across the Pacific Ocean detected an incredibly powerful sound. The signal was so loud that it was picked up by sensors more than 3,000 miles apart.

Researchers nicknamed the mysterious noise “The Bloop.”

At first, scientists wondered whether the sound could have come from an enormous unknown sea creature. Others speculated it might have been a massive underwater landslide or volcanic event.

Years later, some researchers suggested the noise may have been caused by cracking ice near Antarctica. However, the sound’s unusual characteristics still leave room for debate. Even today, the Bloop remains one of the most famous unexplained acoustic signals ever recorded in the ocean.

2. The Baltic Sea Anomaly

In 2011, a Swedish ocean exploration team scanning the floor of the Baltic Sea discovered something unusual on sonar.

The image revealed a large circular formation roughly 200 feet across resting on the seabed. What made it particularly strange were the unusual shapes surrounding it—features that some observers said resembled ramps or stair-like structures.

Speculation spread quickly online. Some suggested it might be the remains of a crashed spacecraft, while others believed it could be a forgotten military structure from World War II.

Most scientists believe the anomaly is likely an unusual natural rock formation left behind by ancient glaciers. Still, the structure’s unusual appearance continues to fuel curiosity and debate.

3. The Devil’s Sea

Off the coast of Japan lies a region known as the Devil’s Sea, sometimes called the Dragon’s Triangle. Over the years, this area has been associated with strange maritime incidents.

Reports include ships disappearing without a trace, malfunctioning navigation equipment, and mysterious lights appearing over the water.

In the 1950s, a Japanese research vessel investigating the area reportedly vanished during its mission, adding to the region’s reputation.

Scientists believe the strange activity in the area may be linked to intense geological activity. The region sits near underwater volcanoes and tectonic boundaries, which could trigger sudden eruptions or releases of gas from the ocean floor. However, no single explanation fully accounts for all the stories connected to the Devil’s Sea.

4. Rogue Waves: Walls of Water from Nowhere

For centuries, sailors told stories about enormous waves that appeared suddenly in the open ocean. These waves were said to rise like towering walls of water before crashing down with devastating force.

For a long time, scientists dismissed these accounts as exaggerations.

That changed when satellites and ocean-monitoring instruments began recording rogue waves exceeding 80 or even 100 feet in height.

Unlike typical storm waves, rogue waves can appear in relatively calm seas and form with little warning. Researchers believe they may be caused by multiple wave systems combining at just the right moment, creating a single massive wave.

Even with modern models, predicting when and where rogue waves will appear remains extremely difficult.

5. The Milky Sea Phenomenon

For centuries, sailors have described a strange event in which the ocean itself begins to glow at night.

Unlike ordinary bioluminescence—which usually appears as sparkling streaks behind a ship—this phenomenon causes vast stretches of ocean to glow with a steady white light, sometimes covering thousands of square miles.

The event is known as a Milky Sea.

Scientists believe it is caused by enormous colonies of bioluminescent bacteria that emit light when certain chemical conditions are present. However, the sheer scale of these glowing oceans is still not fully understood.

Although satellites have confirmed several large Milky Sea events in recent decades, researchers are still trying to determine exactly what environmental conditions trigger them.

6. Giant Squid Encounters

For centuries, sailors told stories about massive tentacled creatures rising from the deep to attack ships. These tales inspired legends of the mythical Kraken.

For a long time, scientists believed such creatures were little more than exaggerations.

That changed when the first images of a live giant squid were captured in 2004.

Scientists now know that giant squid can grow more than 40 feet long, with eyes the size of dinner plates and tentacles lined with powerful suction cups.

Despite this discovery, giant squids remain incredibly elusive. Very few have been observed alive in their natural environment, and much of their behavior is still unknown. Researchers suspect that many deep-sea creatures of similar size may still exist undetected in the vast darkness below.

7. The Ocean’s Unidentified Sounds

The Bloop is not the only mysterious sound detected beneath the waves.

Deep-sea listening stations around the world have recorded a number of strange underwater noises with unusual patterns and frequencies. Some of these sounds have been nicknamed “Julia,” “Upsweep,” and “Train.”

While some signals have eventually been linked to natural phenomena such as shifting ice sheets or volcanic activity, others remain difficult to explain.

Because sound travels extremely efficiently through water, these signals may originate thousands of miles from where they are detected, making their true source difficult to pinpoint.

The Truth Beneath the Waves

The ocean covers more than 70 percent of Earth’s surface, yet much of it remains unexplored. In fact, scientists have mapped the surface of Mars in greater detail than many parts of our own ocean floor.

Every year, new discoveries reveal just how much remains unknown. Researchers continue to find strange deep-sea creatures, hidden underwater mountain ranges, and mysterious geological activity occurring miles beneath the surface.

As technology improves and exploration continues, some of these mysteries may eventually be solved.

But for now, the deep ocean remains one of the most mysterious places on Earth—and its darkest secrets may still be waiting far below the waves.

The Toynbee Tiles: America’s Most Mysterious Street Messages

Cryptic tile found at the corner of Boulevard of the Allies and Wood St in Pittsburgh, PA

The Toynbee tiles—sometimes referred to as Toynbee plaques—are small, rectangular pieces of material, typically made from asphalt, linoleum, or composite substances, that have been embedded into city streets across North and South America, often appearing without warning in busy intersections or highly visible public spaces. Though physically unassuming, the tiles have captured widespread attention due to their cryptic messages, unusual construction, and the complete anonymity of their creator or creators.

The earliest confirmed Toynbee tiles appeared in Philadelphia in the early 1980s, a city that remains central to the mystery. Over time, similar tiles began appearing in other major urban centers, including New York City, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C., as well as internationally in Buenos Aires. The geographic spread of the tiles—often found in places separated by thousands of miles—has only deepened the mystery, raising questions about whether they were placed by a single individual traveling extensively or by multiple collaborators.

Physically, the tiles are typically about the size of a license plate and constructed by embedding arranged letters into a base material that is then pressed into the road surface. The lettering itself is often made from cut linoleum or similar materials, carefully arranged in a mosaic-like fashion. Many tiles appear to have been installed by placing them on the street and allowing the pressure of passing vehicles and heat from the sun to gradually fuse them into the asphalt—an unusual and low-tech method that has nonetheless proven surprisingly durable.

What truly distinguishes the Toynbee tiles, however, are their messages. Most contain variations of a central phrase referencing the ideas of Arnold J. Toynbee, a 20th-century historian known for his analysis of the rise and fall of civilizations. A commonly recurring message reads along the lines of: “TOYNBEE IDEA IN MOViE ‘2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPiTER.” This cryptic statement appears to link Toynbee’s philosophical ideas with the themes of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick’s iconic science fiction film exploring evolution, consciousness, and humanity’s place in the universe.

The meaning behind these messages has been the subject of extensive speculation. Some interpret them as a literal belief in resurrection—suggesting that humanity could one day revive the dead on another planet, possibly as a form of technological or spiritual transcendence. Others view the tiles as symbolic or metaphorical, perhaps reflecting ideas about societal rebirth, the cyclical nature of civilization, or humanity’s relationship with technology and progress.

Despite decades of investigation by journalists, amateur sleuths, and documentary filmmakers, the identity of the person—or people—responsible remains unconfirmed. One widely discussed theory points to a reclusive individual based in Philadelphia, but definitive proof has never been established. The secrecy surrounding the tiles’ placement—often appearing overnight in high-traffic areas without witnesses—has only added to their mystique.

Beyond questions of authorship, interpretations of the tiles’ purpose vary widely. Some see them as a form of outsider art or guerrilla street expression, comparable to graffiti but with a more philosophical or conceptual focus. Others believe they represent a kind of coded manifesto or warning, possibly addressing concerns about the trajectory of modern civilization. A particularly enduring interpretation frames the tiles as social commentary, echoing Toynbee’s own writings by suggesting that Western civilization may be in decline and in need of renewal or transformation.

More speculative theories venture into the realm of conspiracy or science fiction, proposing connections to secret organizations, experimental communication methods, or even extraterrestrial influence. While these ideas lack evidence, they reflect the powerful sense of mystery and curiosity the tiles inspire.

Today, the Toynbee tiles occupy a unique place at the intersection of urban legend, public art, and philosophical puzzle. They are simultaneously tangible objects—embedded in the streets beneath people’s feet—and enigmatic messages that resist easy explanation.

Coral Castle: Florida’s Enigmatic Monument of Secrets and Stone

November 22, 2025 in Florida, Locations

Coral Castle Landscape Photo

Tucked away in the subtropical landscape of Homestead lies a place that seems almost otherworldly: Coral Castle. At first glance, it appears to be a whimsical garden of sculpted stone, but every massive block, every curved wall, and every carved chair tells a story of obsession, secrecy, and possibly supernatural knowledge. Built single-handedly by Edward Leedskalnin over nearly three decades—from 1923 to 1951—the castle continues to baffle engineers, historians, and visitors alike.

Leedskalnin, a Latvian immigrant heartbroken by a failed engagement, dedicated his life to this singular pursuit. Working mostly at night, he quarried, carved, and positioned more than 1,000 tons of oolitic limestone—all without modern machinery, scaffolding, or visible assistance. Local witnesses reported seeing him move enormous stones alone, seemingly defying the laws of physics. He referred to himself as knowing the “secrets of the pyramids” and hinted at mastery over magnetism, leading some to speculate that he had unlocked a mysterious force lost to history. Others chalk it up to mechanical genius—ingenious use of levers, pulleys, and careful balance—but even the most seasoned engineers admit that the sheer scale and precision of the work is astonishing.

The castle itself is as enigmatic as its creator. Within its walls stand sculpted furniture, curved benches, towers, and walls carved with uncanny precision. Perhaps the most famous feature is the nine-ton revolving gate, which turns so smoothly it can be moved with a single finger. Embedded within the structures are astronomical references: a telescope aligned with Polaris, sundials, crescent moons, and planetary carvings—suggesting Leedskalnin was not just building with stone, but communicating with the cosmos.

Every aspect of Coral Castle seems infused with mystery. The type of limestone used is oolitic, quarried locally, yet the precision and balance of the blocks imply knowledge far beyond ordinary masonry. Why did Leedskalnin choose these specific alignments and curves? Was he attempting to encode messages in stone, or were they personal meditations on love, heartbreak, and the universe?

Legends surrounding Coral Castle border on the supernatural. Some claim Leedskalnin possessed the ability to defy gravity, lifting multi-ton stones with minimal effort, while others insist he had unlocked a secret understanding of magnetism that allowed him to manipulate stone as if by invisible hands. Yet no one witnessed the full method, leaving the work shrouded in awe and speculation.

Visitors today experience the castle much as it was left: silent, haunting, and almost alive. The massive walls, the delicately balanced gates, and the carved furniture seem to whisper the secrets of a man who may have understood forces that elude us even now. Walking among the stones, it’s easy to imagine the nights when Leedskalnin labored alone under moonlight, a solitary figure moving impossibly massive stones with patience, skill, and perhaps a touch of the arcane.

Coral Castle endures as a monument not just to human perseverance, but to the unknown. It is part museum, part mechanical wonder, and part unsolved mystery—a place where science, art, and legend collide. Each visitor leaves with questions: How could one man accomplish such a feat alone? What drove him to dedicate decades to this labor? And perhaps most haunting of all—did Edward Leedskalnin truly understand secrets of the universe that remain hidden to us?

The Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp: Psychic Capital of the World

July 7, 2025 in Florida, Hauntings, Locations, Psychic Phenomena

The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association—more commonly known as the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp—is one of the most enduring and historically significant Spiritualist communities in the United States. Located in Cassadaga, this unique settlement was founded in 1894 by George P. Colby, a traveling trance medium who claimed to be guided by spirit entities to establish a center for Spiritualism in the American South. According to Colby, these guiding spirits directed him to the specific location where the camp still exists today, giving the community a deeply rooted origin story tied to spiritual guidance and purpose.

From its inception, Cassadaga was designed to function not just as a religious organization, but as a living, breathing community grounded in the principles of Spiritualism. This belief system centers on the idea that consciousness survives physical death and that communication between the living and the spirit world is possible through trained individuals known as mediums. Over time, the camp developed into a structured society where both residents and visitors could explore these beliefs through practice, study, and shared experience.

Spanning approximately 57 acres, the camp features a blend of private residences, historic buildings, and communal gathering spaces. At its spiritual core stands the Colby Memorial Temple, the primary place of worship within the community. Here, visitors can attend a variety of services, including traditional Sunday gatherings, healing services focused on spiritual energy work, and message services where mediums deliver communications believed to come from spirits. These services are central to the camp’s mission of demonstrating the continuity of life beyond death.

A defining feature of Cassadaga is its emphasis on training and ethical practice. Mediums and healers affiliated with the camp are not self-appointed; they undergo a formal certification process that includes coursework, mentorship, practical demonstrations of ability, and adherence to a strict code of ethics. This structure is intended to maintain credibility and integrity within a field that is often met with skepticism. Many of these certified practitioners live within the community and provide readings, counseling, and healing sessions to visitors seeking guidance, comfort, or spiritual insight.

Beyond its religious functions, Cassadaga also serves as a hub for education and personal development. The camp regularly hosts workshops, lectures, and classes on topics such as mediumship development, energy healing, metaphysical philosophy, and intuitive awareness. These programs attract both serious students of Spiritualism and curious newcomers, making the camp an accessible entry point into the broader world of psychic and spiritual exploration.

Historically, the camp holds significant cultural value. It is recognized as a historic district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reflecting its importance not only as a religious site but also as a preserved example of a Spiritualist community that has remained active for well over a century. Its longevity is particularly notable given the rise and decline of many similar movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Flagstaff, Arizona

Located just off Route 66 in the historic district of downtown Flagstaff lies the Hotel Monte Vista. A place where guests have a tendency to check in but never check out.

Built in 1927 this three-floor, seventy-three-room hotel has played host to some of the world’s most famous people. John WayneHumphrey BogartClark Gable, and Anthony Hopkins, to name a few. And even became something of a movie star itself as it provided the backdrop for the movie Casablanca. However, as accomplished as it is for its role in accommodating film royalty, the Hotel Monte Vista is actually more famous for its list of clientele that hasn’t spent time in front of the camera.

The Meat Man

Back in the 1980s, a long-time boarder earned quite a reputation with his neighbors who dubbed him, “The Meat Man”, as he had a peculiar obsession with hanging raw meat from his chandelier.

It’s been almost 40 years since The Meat Man’s body was discovered in room 220, but that hasn’t stopped him from entertaining the strange habits he had in his worldly life. Not long after his death, a maintenance worker claimed to have entered the room to make repairs, and upon realizing that he had forgotten a necessary tool, left the room for only a short period of time. Upon returning he discovered the television had been turned on with the volume at an ear-piercing level, as well as scraps of bed linens strung through the room having seemingly been torn to shreds in some type of violent outburst. Until its replacement, guests complained of the television turning on by itself and an occasional icy grasp of an invisible hand akin to raw meat.

The Woman in the Rocking Chair

In room 305 lives another unique apparition, that of an elderly woman who sits by the window in a rocking chair, staring out at the world appearing almost transfixed on something. Possibly awaiting someone’s return. Cleaning staff who have attempted to move the empty chair to another part of the room return only to find it moved back to the same spot next to the window. Several guests have reported being awoken by the sound of the chair rocking against the nearby closet door.

The Bandit

Sometime in the 1970s, three men carried out a daring robbery at a nearby bank. Though the heist ended in a shootout with one of the men grazed by a bullet, all three eventually made it to the Hotel Monte Vista’s cocktail lounge where they began to celebrate their newly acquired fortune. While enjoying the after-party one of the men suddenly slumped over falling to the ground dead. It was only then the men realized how severe their accomplice’s wound really was. On several occasions since the bandits passing, staff opening the lounge have been greeted by a disembodied voice saying “Hello” or “Good Morning!”, and barstools and glasses seem to move about on their own.

Women of the Night

In the 1940s, two female sex workers were approached by another guest seeking company for the night. The two women followed the man back to room 306 where at some point during the night the man brutally murdered both, discarding their bodies out of his third-story window. In the times since male guests have reported waking to the feeling of a female hand being placed over their noses or throats.

The Couple

From time to time the ghostly image of two apparitions appears to dance through the lounge. Their eyes locked in an eternal stare, their love for each other as strong now as it was when they were alive.

The Others

From poltergeist activity and disembodied voices to its more notable long-term guests who still occupy their favorite rooms, there appears to be no shortage of mysterious goings-on at the Hotel Monte Vista, which gives the impression that the hotel’s long-term inhabitants haven’t made plans to check out anytime soon.

Die Glocke

Die Glocke in a Nazi laboratory

After realizing that his Nazis were no match for the combined might of the Allied Powers, Adolf Hitler enlisted the help of Germany’s top scientists to begin work on the Wunderwaffe (Wonder Weapons) projects. Among these projects was Die Glocke or “The Bell”, a supposed anti-gravity/time machine, thought to be reverse-engineered alien technology in the shape of a bell

The Bell was thought to hold such staggering power that it would bring the rest of the world to its knees before the Third Reich; however, the Nazis couldn’t manage to harness its full power before the Allies completed the Manhattan Project and successfully ended the war

By the time Allied forces had made their way to the secret location that reportedly housed the bell device, it had been removed, and any scientists and laborers who worked on the project had disappeared, including SS General Hans Kammler, the officer in charge

NASA Faked the Moon Landing

In the years since the Apollo 11 moon landing, conspiracy theorists have argued that neither Neil Armstrong nor Buzz Aldrin ever took one small step for man, let alone one giant leap for mankind.

The following are just a few arguments put forward by conspiracy theorists when it comes to their idea of proof that the landing was faked:

Shadows
Images and video taken from the Apollo 11 mission
seem to contain irregular shadows that are thought to be proof that an auxillary light source aside from the sun was used

Lack of Stars
Conspiracy theorists use the lack of stars in Apollo 11 media to suggest that NASA simply couldn't be bothered to include them when they were desinging the lunar set

Radiation
The earth is surrounded by a zone where highly charged particles from the sun get trapped known as the Van Allen Belt. It is assumed that astronauts canot pass this region without succumbing the effects of the intense radiation levels

Wind
Conspiracy theorists often point out that Buzz Aldrin is obvioulsy proudly saluting a waving flag and if there is not atmosphere, how could the flag be waving in the wind?

The New World Order

cloaked figures in a circle around an altar

The corridors of the Denver International Airport are lined with strange and disturbing murals depicting a dichotomy of scenes from war to world peace, statues of gargoyles preside above baggage claims areas, and a 32ft tall blue horse with glowing red eyes rears up over the terminal access road

These cryptic and out-of-place forms of “art”, combined with the fact that the airport’s total price tag came in at 3 billion dollars over budget, have led many conspiracy theorists to believe that there is a secret plan of a shadow government to instill a New World Order, and the Denver Colorado Airport is its base of operations

Paul McCartney is Dead

Paul McCartney is a zombie

Paul McCartney is dead is an urban legend that alleges Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash in 1966 and quickly replaced by a look-alike to not garner suspicion from Beatles fans, however, thousands have claimed to put together the subliminal imagery found on the album covers and cryptic statements that can be heard when particular songs are played backward leading them to discover the truth

Chemtrails

crisscrossing Chemtrails in a clear sky over a city

Contrails, short for condensation trails, occur as water vapor from aircraft exhaust condenses and freezes; however, some believe that these sky trails are not the direct result of a chemical reaction but proof that the government is spraying toxic chemicals in the air above our heads in an attempt to poison humanity or possibly control the weather

HAARP

a tornado approaching a city

Speaking of controlling the weather, the Air Force’s High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), garnered quite a bit of attention from internet conspiracy theorists during its operation in the remote Alaskan wilderness (1993 – 2015)

HAARP was designed to study the ionosphere and develop technology for radio communications; however, it soon became the target of conspiracy theorists who claimed that it could manipulate the weather, triggering devastating events such as tsunamis and earthquakes at will, as well as control minds with a global reach

HAARP was the brainchild of Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens died in a plane crash in 2010, and shortly after, the Air Force decided that it did not want to continue funding the project and switched off the station in 2014

Flat EarthTheory

Although ancient people have depicted the world as round in drawings, paintings, and stories for thousands of years, and the ancient Greeks were able to accurately calculate the earth’s circumference around 300 BC, there are still those out there who will argue that we are aboard a pancake-shaped disk hurling through space

Barack Obama’s Birth Certificate

Barack Obama Certification Of Live Birth Hawaii

During the 2008 primary campaign between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, a chain email began to circulate that called Barack Obama’s citizenship into question, citing his actual location of birth to be Kenya, a serious oversight for anyone with the hopes of becoming the next American president. This of course, led to a public outcry for clarification which saw the Obama campaign post a copy of the birth certificate on its website

Shortly after the posting, the authenticity of the document came into question as there were accusations of the document having been forged using Adobe Photoshop, although the document was reviewed by fact-checking websites and found to be authentic

Further speculation arose in 2009 when researchers revealed that Hawaii destroyed all paper birth records in 2001. Contradicting this assertion, the public information officer for the Hawaii Department of Health later stated that they do not destroy vital records.

Although the thousands of people who requested copies of Obama’s birth certificate from the state of Hawaii were denied, as they were not privy to the information, the director of the State Department of Health has stated that they most certainly do have Barack Obama’s original birth certificate on record

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many conspiracy theories abound, but none more prolific than the idea that goes directly to the root of the problem. From reports of black helicopters hovering high above cities dumping the contagion onto the masses, to black vans packed with government operatives driving around neighborhoods and spraying lawns with virus-containing chemicals, COVID-19 was and still is believed by many to have been manufactured by the government as a way to control the population

The Kennedy Assassination

President John f Kennedy giving a speech at the white house

The events surrounding the November 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy have led to some of the most intriguing conspiracy theories of all time, including government involvement and a cover-up that goes almost to the top.

While everyone knows the name Lee Harvey Oswald as the man accused of taking the life of the 35th president of the United States, many Americans still don’t believe that he acted alone. As Oswald was being transported to a local jail for the murder, he was approached and fatally shot by nightclub owner Jack Ruby, an action that conspiracy theorists found all too convenient

By the time the Warren Commission made public their findings in response to the inquest of Lyndon B. Johnson regarding the circumstances surrounding the assassination, conspiracy theorists weren’t keen on listening, as they had already run away with their own ideas as to who the actual killer or killers might have been:

The CIA: One theory suggests that the CIA had a hand in the assassination as it was retaliation for the botched Bay of Pigs Invasion attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. This idea was fueled even further as initially, JFK’s brother Bobby Kennedy had thought that rogue CIA agents had been involved, although he later reconsidered.

The MOB: Another theory suggests that the assassination may have been a mob hit in retaliation for Bobby Kennedy‘s notorious vendetta against the organization

9/11 Was an Inside Job

In the time following the September 11, 2001, hijacking attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon that killed nearly 3,000 people, numerous conspiracy theories accusing the United States government of perpetrating the attacks erupted out of uninformed assessments of the media coverage and eyewitness statements

The most prevalent theory is that the George W. Bush administration knew of the impending attacks yet did nothing to prevent them, as they believed that such an event would fuel hatred by the American people, leading them to back the administration’s call for war, which was nothing more than a way to gain access to oilfields in Iraq and Afghanistan

A second theory proposes that not only did the Bush administration have an agenda, but theyalso conspired to conduct the attacks with the help of a shadow government

Proponents of these theories cite statements such as the towers could only have fallen as the direct result of a controlled demolition, and that the Pentagon was not struck by a plane, but rather a missile

Fluoride Makes You More Stupider

a mouth with black and missing teeth

Flouride helps to combat the weakening of teeth and the formation of cavities by rebuilding and restrengthening tooth enamel and as such is commonly added to drinking water in cities and towns across America, however, conspiracy theorists argue that the effects of fluoride far outweigh the advantages, and that even though city governments realize these harmful effects they continue to add fluoride as it is believed that they are paid to do so by pharmaceutical companies who would benefit from a constantly ill society.

Another theory claims that a hidden side effect of fluoride consumption is that it drastically lowers mental abilities, resulting in the dumbing down of the population, allowing an evil government to more easily exert control

Long Live the King

elvis presley sitting in a ufo in outer space

What can be said about this one, other than some still believe that Elvis Presley faked his own death and is alive and well (albeit very old)

In the 1990s, tabloid magazines ran wild with the idea that the King of Rock n’ Roll defied death and the watchful eyes of his millions of fans, only to randomly reappear in strange places like alien spacecraft, according to hundreds of so-called eyewitness sightings

Jesus and Mary Magdalene

 Mary Magdalene and baby

An old theory that was hurled into the mainstream by Dan Brown’s blockbusting novel “The Davinci Code”, suggests that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and fathered children, extending the royal bloodline down through the ages. This would mean that somewhere out there (southern France as the book would have it) are actual descendants of the most royal of bloodlines and unequivocal proof of Jesus himself, however, the actual whereabouts of these ancestors of God are a highly guarded secret known only to their sworn protectors the Priory of Scion so if the story is true were probably not going to see the 23andMe results on the History channel any time soon

Black Helicopters

a Black Hawk helicopter flying over a city

In the 1990s, amidst the popular militia movement, rumors of the United Nations piloting black helicopters patrolling American cities and suburbs grew through the many claims of so-called eyewitnesses, though most stories saw them having more to do with fears of alien invasion rather than a New World Order.

AIDs and the KGB

evil scientist in a laboratory

The theory goes that in 1974, the KGB (or possibly the CIA) developed the killer virus AIDS in a laboratory as a means of global population control and it is one that is still believed by many today.

This idea may have stemmed from the widely circulated theory of Dr. William Campbell Douglas, who also believed that the virus was engineered by the World Health Organization, which first experimented with it in Africa

Princess Diana was Murdered

princess Diana in limo

When Princess Diana, “the People’s Princess,” was killed in a car accident less than a year after her divorce from Prince Charles, conspiracy theorists popped out of the woodwork, asserting that her death was no accident but an elaborately planned murder and cover-up orchestrated by the royal family

The theory claims that Princess Diana and her boyfriend, Egyptian film producer Dodi Fayed, who was to propose the night of the accident, were murdered because the monarchy couldn’t bear the idea of the heirs to the British throne having an Egyptian, Muslim, stepfather; therefore, they effectively staged a car crash that would kill two birds with one stone

Although Diana was still alive when emergency services arrived on the scene, her medical care was supposedly sabotaged as she was treated at the scene according to French protocol instead of immediately being taken to the nearest hospital

Area 51

ufo hovering in an airforce base hangar

As of today, the only confirmed use of the Area 51 Air Force military installation is as a flight testing facility; however, its shady history has sparked more conspiracy theories than any other military installation in the world.

The installation is not accessible to the public, and its satellite imagery (Google Maps) had been censored until 2018. Its parameter is under heavy 24-hour surveillance by what has been described as aggressive security who patrol the area in unmarked, white trucks. Facility employees, who are not allowed to carry any identification, reportedly fly in and out of the base via unmarked planes that leave from a highly restricted terminal within the McCarran International Airport.

Before 2013, the United States government had never admitted the existence of Area51 until its response to a Freedom of Information Act regarding declassified documents chronicling the history of the U-2 spy plane and Oxcart programs

Although the aforementioned seems like shady business, most of us would expect such secrecy from a SECRET military base, right? So, where does all the extraterrestrial hype come from, you ask? Enter Bob Lazaar

Bob Lazar is a scientist who came forward in 1989 claiming to have not only worked at the mysterious Area 51 base, but that he also had the job of reverse engineering a recovered alien spacecraft. Mr. Lazar would go on to describe precise details that only an employee with the proper clearance would have of the facility’s procedures. He would also describe interactions he witnessed between other employees and living extraterrestrials

Since Lazar’s first public statement, many have tried to discredit his statements, though seemingly no one has been successful, especially in the eyes of conspiracy theorists who are certain he’s telling the truth

Global Warming is a Hoax

Climate change deniers believe that global warming is a conspiracy designed by the government as a way to subdue populations with taxation and the future implementation of lockdowns that will supposedly reduce mankind’s effects on the environment

Big Pharma Suppresses Cures

a man in labcoat holding a bunch of money

When it comes to conspiracies, those related to the healthcare industry are probably the most widely believed, as at one time or another, almost everyone has had a bad experience when it comes to their healthcare or the healthcare of a loved one

With the news media constantly filled with reports of new advancements and scientific breakthroughs within the industry advancing exponentially year after year, many people find it hard to believe that some of the most prolific diseases still exist, with little headway made to slow or stop their advancement

This has led to a slew of theories accusing public health officials and the Food and Drug Administration of folding under pressure from drug companies to suppress statistics and knowledge of natural cures for cancer and other ailments in an attempt to force the public to become repeat customers

The Roswell Coverup

wreckage of an alien spaceship in the desert

RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region” was the featured cover story in the July 8, 1947, issue of the Roswell Daily Record that made international headlines when it announced that the United States Army was in possession of a “flying disc” after its recovery of a large field of metallic debris near a Roswell ranch. The article also contained a statement from an RAAF crew member named Robert Porter, who was tasked with loading the wreckage of what he was “told was a flying saucer” onto a flight bound for Fort Worth Army Airfield.

This story of a flying disc was retracted the very next day during a press conference where army officials stated what they did in fact have was debris from a crashed weather balloon, abruptly ending civilian and media interest in the case for the next three decades, until a book reigniting the idea of a cover-up would be published

The Hollow Earth Theory

dinosaurs roaming inside a Hollow Earth

For centuries, mankind has told stories of a world inside of our own, much like that within the pages of Jules Verne’s “A Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. On the opposite end of that spectrum, many ancient and modern-day religions use deep caverns under the earth’s crust as the location for their iterations of Hell.

With the plethora of tales such as these, it’s no wonder that those who are prone to believing conspiracies often wonder what is going on just under their feet. From unextinct dinosaurs and alien bases to the secret home of a reptilian race, conspiracy theorists believe in the existence of another world deep within our hollow world, now they just have to find a way in

A Coldblooded Government

a reptilian in a suit standing in an office

A popular theory among ufologists is that a race of extraterrestrial reptilian beings, also known as saurians, draconians, serpent men, or lizard people, believed to hail from the Draco constellation, have used their shape-shifting and mind-control abilities to disguise themselves as humans, infiltrating the highest levels of world government and using their political prowess to influence societies.

When they are not campaigning for world domination, these reptilians are believed to live in underground tunnels and dwellings deep within the earth, such as the large complex believed to exist under the Denver International Airport, as the environment closely resembles that of their own planet. Living in this manner allows the reptilians to retreat from public view and regain their strength, as they can only manage to sustain a human appearance for so many hours due to the stress inflicted upon their cold-blooded bodies

The Wow! Signal: A Comet or Extraterrestrial Communication?

December 31, 2023 in Extraterrestrial, Science & Technology

The Wow! Signal was a radio signal detected by astronomer Jerry R. Ehman on August 15, 1977, while he was working on a SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project at the Big Ear radio telescope of Ohio State University.

What made the signal so fascinating was its unusual nature. It was a narrowband radio signal that lasted for only 72 seconds and appeared to come from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, 120 light-years away. The signal was so strong that Ehman circled it on the computer printout and wrote “Wow!” next to it, hence the name Wow! Signal.

Despite numerous additional attempts to detect the signal, it has never been observed again since. Scientists and researchers have proposed several theories about its origin, including an attempt by extraterrestrial intelligence to communicate, although no one theory has ever been widely accepted, nor has the possibility of the signal being artificial been ruled out.

In 2017 A team of researchers at the Center of Planetary Science proposed what they believe to be a valid argument that the origin of the signal was indeed a comet, stating that two previously undiscovered comets (at the time) were passing through the same part of the sky that the Big Ear telescope had been listening to that particular day. The team also stated that the movement of the comments would explain why the signal was never detected again.

Oscar: The Cat That Could Predict Death

Oscar the Cat makes his rounds at the Steere House Nursing Home
Image: steerehouse.org

Oscar the Cat is a feline who lived at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. This remarkable cat had a unique ability to predict the deaths of terminally ill patients.

The story of Oscar first gained media attention in 2007 when a doctor at Steere House, Dr. David Dosa, wrote an article about him in the New England Journal of Medicine. According to Dr. Dosa, Oscar had the uncanny ability to sense when a patient was nearing the end of their life.

Oscar would make his daily rounds at the nursing home, sniffing and observing the patients. Most he was indifferent to, though the ones he would choose to stop and curl up with would inevitably die within only a few hours.

Oscar’s accuracy in predicting the impending death of the residents was so great that the nursing home implemented a protocol requiring that patients’ families be immediately notified, anticipating their final hours

Dr. Dosa believes that Oscar’s accuracy in predicting death stemmed from his ability to smell chemicals released from dying cells, triggering an interest in that patient.

Oscar’s extraordinary skill has brought comfort and solace to many patients and their families over the years. He has been featured in numerous news articles and television programs and even has his own book, “Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat,” written by Dr. Dosa.
Despite his fame,

Oscar remained a humble and affectionate cat who was adored by the staff and residents of Steere House, accurately predicting over 100 deaths until his own passing on February 22, 2022.

A mysterious figure waits in the shadows

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist

A mysterious figure waits in the shadows
Luis Villasmil

On St. Patrick’s Day (March 18th) morning in 1990, two men disguised as police entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The two quickly subdued the guards, and made off with 13 works of art totaling an estimated 500 million dollars, making it the highest-valued museum heist in history.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which opened to the public in 1903, was built as a location for Isabella Stewart Gardner to store her private art collection. Upon Gardner’s death in 1924, the museum was left with a $3.6 million dollar endowment contingent on two stipulations; no one is to alter the arrangement of the artwork, and no artwork is permitted to be sold from or added to the collection.

By the early 1980s, the museum was suffering the effects of heavy financial strain leaving the building which lacked modern amenities such as climate control and a modern security system, in desperate need of maintenance, however, it was only after the FBI uncovered a 1982 plot by local criminals to rob the facility that funds allocated toward upgrades.

The museum seemed to take the threat seriously, adding 60 infrared motion detectors, and CCTV cameras on each corner of the building’s perimeter, though the upgrade lacked the addition of interior cameras, still relying heavily on the use of patrolling guards whose only method of contacting the police was to press a button located at the security desk. Ultimately, it would be this decision that allowed for the robbery to take place as two men disguised as police were able to con Rick Abath and a fellow guard Randy Hestand into allowing them access into the museum at which point the guards were restrained and led, heads wrapped in duct tape, to the basement of the building where they were handcuffed to a steam pipe and workbench.

After subduing the guards, the two robbers proceeded to move room to room within the museum for the next 81 minutes gathering 13 works of art totaling an estimated 500 million dollars before checking on the guards one last time and then disappearing into the night.

When the next guard arrived for his morning shift and could not establish communication with anyone inside he notified the security director who entered the building and called the police after finding the security desk empty. When police arrived they found the guards still in the basement where the robbers had left them.

In 1994, museum director Anne Hawley received an anonymous letter stating that the writer was attempting to negotiate the return of the artwork for immunity and the sum of $2.6 million dollars. The director was instructed to reply with a coded message in the Boston Globe if she agreed to the terms. Hawley informed the FBI who then contacted the newspaper to print the message in the May 1, 1994 edition. A few days later, Hawley received another message stating that the writer had become increasingly nervous over the FBI’s attempts to determine their identity and insisted they needed more time to evaluate their options. Hawley never heard from the writer ever again.

In the late 1880s, the Grand Midway Hotel mostly provided modest accommodations for local coal miners; now it is in the Guinness World Records for the largest Ouija board and tarot card.

Blair Murphy, the owner of the Grand Midway Hotel in Windber, Pennsylvania, says that his inspiration for the 1,302.54 square-foot Ouija board atop the hotel came to him one night as he was using an Ouija board in an attempt to communicate with spirits from within the hotel’s Edgar Allen Poe Room. This attempted communication was essentially a way to stir things (paranormal activity) up in the hotel amidst a period of what Murphy calls a two-year lull. The idea seemed to work; shortly after, the hotel returned to its old self, abuzz with new activity as Blair and his team got to work on the roof.

GrandMidwayHotel

The Grand Midway Hotel, atop which the giant Ouija board sits, happens to be a 3-story building. Ironically, the original inventor of the Ouija board, William Fuld, died due to injuries sustained falling off the roof of a 3-story building after a railing he was leaning against gave way.

In 2017, Murphy recruited painter Terrence Kauffman, and together the pair created a work of art 21 ft 1 in long, by 16 ft wide that would become the world’s largest tarot card. The card represents good fortune and can be viewed suspended from the ceiling of the hotel’s first-floor library.

Visit

The Grand Midway Hotel may be known for its oversized Ouija board and tarot card, but that is not the end of its one-of-a-kind attractions. The hotel also boasts some 32 rooms with several suites extensively decorated in their own theme: Vampire Suite, Frankenstein Suite, Werewolf Suite, Mummy Suite, Mermaid Suite, Dragon Suite, Phantom Suite, and Beatnik Suite. In addition to the suites, the hotel also includes a Titanic Bar, Seance Parlour, Deerhead Hall, Monkey Room, the Poe Room, Canopy Room, and Zombie Library Room.

Standing next to the Midway is the Shakespeare House bed and breakfast, and just across the street is the Alan Freed sidewalk star, a memorial for the Windber, PA native who coined the term Rock and Roll.

The History of Skinwalker Ranch

Skinwalker ranch

The Skinwalker Ranch, aka Sherman Ranch, is a 512-acre property located in the Uinta Basin, Utah, that boasts more than its fair share of unexplained phenomena. From UFOs and cattle mutilations to shapeshifting entities and rumors of secret government projects, the location is an absolute hub of activity and as such, has been recognized as the most scientifically studied paranormal hotspot on the planet.

Historically, the ranch sits on UteTribe land, though the term skin-walker has its origins in Navajo culture. Directly translating to “by means of it, it goes on all fours, a skinwalker is a witch that is capable of possessing animals and humans, able to walk around in their bodies as harbingers of death or bad omens.

From Sherman to Skinwalker

Reports of skinwalker activity on the ranch first appeared in 1996 when a series of articles written by investigative journalist George Knapp appeared in the Salt Lake City Deseret News. These stories detailed the claims of the Sherman family, who after purchasing the ranch in 1994, began to experience various frightening paranormal encounters, most notably with that of a skinwalker. Terry Sherman would tell of the night that started it all and projected the then-Sherman Ranch into infamy. He claims that, reacting to a loud noise from outside, he hurriedly went to investigate. Upon stepping out onto his porch he encountered what he stated was a wolf, larger than any he had ever seen before. Quickly fetching his gun, Terry fired several shots into the animal, which as he further described, had absolutely no effect on the animal, as if the shots went right through it. When the wolf finally departed, Terry gave chase, though not for very long as its tracks quickly disappeared, seemingly vanishing into thin air.

The family would go on to tell of many more encounters during their time on the ranch, including mysterious objects in the sky, disembodied voices, and cattle mutilations. In 1996, the Shermans sold the property to Robert Bigelow just two years after they bought it.

Enter NIDSci

Robert Bigelow was an eccentric millionaire and the founder of the National Institute for Discovery Science, a research organization created to study fringe sciences. He and NIDSci would use the ranch as a research hub for the next several years.

What Did They Find?

It seems that to date, if the research produced any definitive proof of paranormal activity at the ranch, the team chose not to make the information public. However, NIDSci researchers did from time to time add to the mystery that is Skinwalker Ranch by sharing their own stories of the mysterious entities and events they encountered throughout their time at the location, including a particular account of cattle mutilation in which the cow had been completely disemboweled, though there was no sign of blood surrounding the body. Stranger still, researchers would also point out that the occurrence happened in broad daylight, with many claiming to have seen the animal alive and well within an hour of the gruesome find. The NIDSCi would disband in 2004 but maintain ownership of the property until 2016, when it was sold to an anonymous buyer.

Another Fugal Attempt?

In 2020, the new owner would reveal himself as Brandon Fugal, who would announce plans for the History Channel to use the property for shooting the reality tv show, “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch”. On the show, Fugal and his team of researchers attempt to do what the NIDSCi that came before could not, capture proof of and explain the phenomena that so famously occur at the ranch.

Beneath the Paths: The Haunted Legacy of Lincoln Park Zoo

May 24, 2023 in Hauntings, Illinois, Locations, United States, Urban Legends

Lincoln Park Zoo main entrance
Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago

Tucked in the heart of Chicago, the 35-acre Lincoln Park Zoo is often celebrated for its 1,100 animals spanning 200 species and its free admission, a rarity in North America. Visitors wander past lions, flamingos, and snow leopards, enchanted by the sights and sounds of the animal kingdom. Yet beneath the chirping of birds and the hum of families strolling through its paths, the land itself carries a far older, darker story—one that has earned Lincoln Park Zoo the reputation as the most haunted zoo on the continent.

Long before cages and enclosures, this land was the Chicago City Cemetery. At its peak, some 35,000 bodies rested here, buried in neat rows beneath the low-lying ground that slopes toward Lake Michigan. Locals had always felt uneasy about the cemetery’s location. The proximity to the water was thought to contaminate the city’s drinking supply, aiding the spread of illness, disease, and death. The land itself seemed to fester with unease, a place where the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin. In the late 19th century, public health officials, led by Dr. John Rauch, began a campaign to relocate most of the bodies to cemeteries beyond the city limits, hoping to cleanse the area. Official records claimed all remains had been moved, but historians and urban legends tell a far more unsettling story: roughly 12,000 bodies were never accounted for, left behind to linger beneath the soil, hidden beneath what would eventually become the zoo’s grassy paths and animal enclosures. Over the years, bones have been uncovered during construction and landscaping, a macabre reminder that the dead never fully left.

Among the cemetery’s many secrets, few are as famous—or as eerie—as the story of Ira Couch, a wealthy hotelier and Chicago’s second-richest resident. Upon his death in 1857, following a family trip to Cuba, Couch was entombed in a grand, marble mausoleum. Its opulence drew admiration and curiosity, a stark contrast to the modest graves surrounding it. When the city began relocating the cemetery’s residents, Couch’s tomb was mysteriously spared. Some suggest his family used wealth and influence to prevent the move; others argue the structure was simply too massive to transport. Whatever the truth, his tomb still stands today, silent, looming, and foreboding—a sentinel over the forgotten dead that still wander the grounds.

The stories of hauntings at Lincoln Park Zoo are as chilling as the history itself. Visitors report seeing pale figures in Victorian dress drifting silently among the trees, their expressions distant, eyes vacant. Near the Lion House, the ghost of a woman is said to appear suddenly in the women’s restroom, disappearing moments later as if swallowed by the air itself. Staff members tell of faucets turning on and off of their own accord, lights that flicker without warning, and doors that slam violently behind them when no one is near. On quiet nights, some swear they can hear soft whispers or footsteps along the zoo’s pathways—footsteps that do not belong to the living.

Ira Couch himself has become the focus of local legend. It is said that those bold—or foolish—enough to approach his mausoleum at midnight and recite the words, “The graves belong to the dead, not the living,” are met with a chilling encounter. The air grows frigid, shadows lengthen, and a spectral figure emerges from the mausoleum, silent and imposing, as if guarding the graves of those who were left behind. Moments later, he vanishes into the darkness, leaving behind only the echo of his presence and the icy touch of dread.

Even in daylight, the eerie atmosphere persists. Visitors sometimes feel an inexplicable chill as they wander the zoo’s winding paths. Certain areas seem heavier, darker, as though the weight of the buried dead presses up from beneath the soil. Children have been known to point to empty air, insisting they see someone—or something—following them. Occasionally, construction crews or maintenance workers stumble upon bones, remnants of a time when the living feared this land, and the dead were too numerous, too forgotten to move entirely.

The haunted energy of Lincoln Park Zoo is subtle yet persistent, lurking just beyond the edges of perception. Every rustle of leaves, every sudden shadow, seems to whisper that the dead are not gone—that they watch, they wander, they remember. The zoo, with its cheerful crowds and playful animals, sits atop the graves of thousands, a monument to a past the city tried to bury but could never fully erase.

The Dancing Plague of 1518

April 11, 2023 in Hoaxes

Photo: Wikimedia

One day in July of 1518, a woman took to the streets in Strasbourg, Alsace (France), and began to dance. She danced feverishly throughout the day and into the night and on, and on without pause. While this may seem like a case of one individual suffering from a psychological illness, and that may have partially been the case, the story becomes even more strange when you find out that, although she started alone, her dance routine didn’t end that way.

Dance like nobody’s watching

Historical documents of the time including physician notes,  church sermons, news articles, and notes made by the Strasbourg city council all state a similar case; from July to September of 1518 an unknown amount of people believed to be between 50 to 400, followed the woman’s lead, one or several at a time, dancing into the streets as if in a trance for weeks on end. The affair caused such a stir that the city leaders would have no choice but to intervene, tasking local physicians to commit many of those affected by the madness.

Although one might assume that the constant and strenuous activity of the revelers would likely have at the very least led to dehydration and exhaustion, save even more serious medical conditions, no accounts of injuries or fatalities are known to have been recorded. What’s more, no definitive explanation has ever been given as to the cause of the hysteria, though it doesn’t mean a few haven’t tried.

They Must Be Trippin’

Being that we are talking about an event that had taken place in a period of time where witches were hanged, vampires staked through the heart, and alchemy was still considered to be at the forefront of science, the most sensible explanation at the time was demonic possession. A modern attempt at solving the puzzle focuses on the possibility of food poisoning, as it is now known that a rather toxic and psychoactive chemical (the one from which LSD was originally synthesized) is a product of particular fungi known to grow on the grain used to make bread. Though this theory has some weight, it heavily relies on the assumption that all 400 people would react the same way after consuming the hallucinogen, leaving the notion possible but not plausible.

Mass Hysteria

Another theory puts forth the notion that this particular group of partygoers was simply reacting to the years of extreme pressures and ruthlessness that were the medieval period, and all in one sudden and simultaneous explosion of psychological stress, came together to vent their frustrations.

While the exact cause of the Dancing Plague of 1518 will probably never be uncovered, it seems the most that we can hope for is that all involved had a good time, at least the ones who weren’t committed anyway.

The Smuttynose Island Murders: Did They Hang the Wrong Man?

April 5, 2023 in Maine, Unsolved Crime

Smuttynose Island is a 27-acre island located in the Isles of Shoals, 7 miles off Maine’s coast. Named so because sailors claimed that when viewed from their ship, due to the amount of seaweed that would clump at one end, the island looked like the smutty nose of an enormous sea creature.

In 1868, a couple named John and Maren Hontvet immigrated to the United States, creating a homestead on the then uninhabited Smuttynose Island. Soon after, John bought a fishing boat and named it the Clarabella. Within a few years, John would manage to turn his fishing endeavor into quite a business for himself, and it would soon become too much to handle alone.

Enter Louis Wagner

Luckily for John, it was around this time that he met a 28-year-old fisherman named Louis Wagner. Louis was described by the locals as an imposing figure of Prussian descent, thick accent, and muscular build, and thus had become something to speak of in the small fishing community where everyone knew everyone.

John and Louis would quickly become friends, with John often inviting Louis over to the house for meals and soon offering him a job aboard the Clarabella and even a room in his cottage, as this would be much easier on the two men from a business perspective.

In the summer of 1871, Maren’s sister Karen came to stay with her after the death of her boyfriend, quickly finding work on Appledore Island. Months later, John’s brother Matthew and Maren’s brother Evan, along with his new wife Aneth,e would also find their way to the island. Evan and Matthew were quickly put to work aboard the Clarabella, as Anette helped Maren around the house.

The Motive

Louis now felt the new members of the household were encroaching on what he and his friend John had built together, and by November of 1872, had moved out of the cottage and off the island. He took a job as a deckhand with another fishing boat known as the Addison Gilbert, though the move proved to be short-lived as the Addison Gilbert would later wreck and sink off the coast of New Hampshire, forcing Louis to take up work at the wharves in Portsmouth. Now, Louis was being paid just enough money to cover his room and board and little else, and by the spring of 1873, he was nearly destitute, a perfect motive to invent a perfect crime.

On March 5, 1873, Louis would be on the docks in Portsmouth when the Clarabella arrived. John, Matthew, and Ivan were forced to wait as the train carrying their bait was running late. John would later testify that Louis had asked him three times if the men would return home or the women would be left alone on the island that night.

Louis, believing that John kept as much as $500 at the cottage and now assured that the men would be stuck on the mainland for the night, stole a wooden dory and rowed to Smuttynose Island, hoping to rob the cottage while the women were asleep.

A Not-So-Perfect Crime

When Louis entered the house, his movements woke Karen, who was quickly struck with a chair before she could recognize him. Maren, awoken by the commotion, was able to drag her sister into Anethe’s room and barricade the door. Anethe attempted to escape by climbing out of a window but stumbled directly into the path of Loui,s who had by then already exited the house. Upon recognizing the attacker, Anethe cried, “Louis! Louis! Louis!” just before Louis reached for a nearby axe and struck her in the head. A scene Maren witnessed from the window. Upon Louis’s re-entering the house, Maren climbed through the window and quickly ran to another part of the island and hid, although unfortunately, Karen was unable to recover from her assault in time. Louis, who had combed the island but was unable to locate Maren, returned to the cottage for whatever money he could find and then left Smuttynose Island. Later in the trial, Maren would provide this testimony, which would ultimately lead to Louis Wagner being convicted and sentenced to hang for the murders.

Was It A Set-Up?

While awaiting his execution, Louis would receive many visitors. They came convinced of his guilt, only to leave in doubt as he would charismatically profess his innocence. He would point the finger at the one he would claim was the real killer, none other than the very person who had put him on trial, Maren Hontvet. Louis told visitors that John Hontvet would often complain that all the things the people at his house were eating were costing him money. Purporting that John and Maren themselves had a motive to commit the murders.

Many people would come to believe that Maren Hontvet was the real killer, as she was covered in blood and the only living witness. During the trial, it was pointed out that the axe wounds were not heavy or deep enough to have been caused by such a strapping young man as Louis Wagner, but felt more like wounds that could have been delivered by a much smaller, frailer woman.

On June 25th, 1875, despite pleas from members of the community, Louis Wagner was hanged.  “I didn’t do it,” he cried, just before falling through the gallows’ floor.

The Dyatlov Pass incident

In what would later become known as the Dyatlov Pass incident, nine very experienced soviet hikers (seven men and two women) would meet their untimely fate while camping for the night on the eastern slopes of Kholat Syakhl during their 200-mile trek across Russia’s Ural Mountains. Sometime during the night on February 1, 1959, the hikers found reason to cut their way out of the would-be safety of the tent and flee into the surrounding wilderness wearing little to no protection from the elements, a decision that would ultimately prove fatal for all.

When a search team discovered the campsite, the expedition’s badly damaged tent was barely able to be noticed peaking through the snow and had the appearance of being cut open from the inside. Over the upcoming months, teams would slowly uncover more and more grisly details of the now-famous incident.

 A Gruesome Scene

Upon discovery of the bodies scattered throughout the mountainside, Soviet officials found that only six of the hikers had actually succumbed to hypothermia; the rest, physical trauma unlike any that had been seen before, signs of wartime injuries. One victim had severe skull damage, two had their chests crushed, and another had a cranial fracture. Four of the bodies were discovered lying in a creek, and three of these four had extensive soft tissue damage to the head and face. Two had their eyes torn out, one had its tongue removed, and the other was missing eyebrows.

Bureaucracy at its finest

The soviet powers that be seemed to hamper any real investigation into the case, later citing a “compelling natural force” as the cause of the deaths. This inconclusive statement has, over the years, led many to speculate about the cause of the deaths, producing ideas and conspiracy theories ranging from a Russian experiment to a vortex capable of producing panic attacks.

In 2019, after a strong push stemming from global media, Russian officials decided to reinvestigate the incident, and their findings have since been published, citing once again an avalanche as the reason for the deaths. Although many important details have seemingly been omitted from the report, such as a concise explanation of how an avalanche could cause the physical trauma as was reportedly found on the bodies, and yet had left no evidence of its occurrence for the first search teams. Furthermore, when checking back, there was no snowfall on February 1st, 1959, so without the increased weight of added snow, what exactly caused the avalanche? Once again, the report leaves more questions than answers, brewing up even more conspiracy theories involving a government already known for surrounding itself with fog.

Science has a viable explanation

In 2021, two scientists, Alexander Puzrin, a geotechnical engineer at ETH Zürich, and Johan Gaume, head of the Snow Avalanche Simulation Laboratory at EPFL, set out to add weight to the avalanche theory. Together, they developed computer simulations to replicate the conditions the hikers faced that night. What they found was astonishing.

The landscape of Kholat Saykhl had made the slope of the encampment appear much milder than it was, fooling the seasoned hikers.  Diary entries recovered from the group record very high winds leading into that night, which are now thought by the two researchers to have been katabatic winds, which is a wind that carries high-density air from a higher elevation down a slope under the force of gravity. This would explain how the existing snow was put under a heavier load without the addition of new snow. Adding this information to the idea that the slope was already more precarious than the hikers initially thought produced simulations that show how a smaller avalanche, roughly the size of an SUV, could have taken place and then quickly been covered over by fresh snow, leaving no trace of the occurrence for search teams.

What about their injuries?

The scientist’s model also depicts how, in this particular situation, an SUV-sized block of snow could have caused the physical trauma members of the groups experienced without immediately proving fatal.

Although any attempt to explain exactly why the hikers were found where they were could only be speculation, it is assumed by Puzrin that immediately after the avalanche, those who were not initially harmed by the falling snow and ice cut themselves out of the ten,t assisting the wounded to the safety of the woodline before ultimately succumbing to hypothermia.

Are There Aztec Pyramids Hidden Underwater in Wisconsin?

In southeastern Wisconsin lies Rock Lake, once known by its ancient name, Tyranena, which means “sparkling waters”. Here, natives tell of a “foreign tribe” that built stone structures and effigy mounds that now lie underwater. In 1900, a pair of duck hunters were paddling their boat when one of the men’s oars hit what appeared to be the top of one of three pyramids near the center of the lake. Since the “discovery”, many theories exist as to who or what led to the creation of the pyramids, with glacier movement depositing the rocks being the most plausible. However, a more fantastical theory, one where the Aztecs are attributed as the builders, stands out.

To make things more interesting, the locals also tell of a Loch Ness Monster-type cryptid that inhabits the lake known as Rocky, guardian of the pyramids. While much like its Scottish counterpart, no one has ever come up with physical proof of the monster, a few divers have reported sightings while exploring the murky, weed-filled depths, and others who have not often claim to have an uneasy feeling as if they are being watched.

A short background of the Aztecs

The Aztecs emerged in central Mexico in the early 1300s. A warrior civilization that often conquered nearby tribes. Their villages consisted of large central markets and pyramids, using walls to separate different classes, the elite on one side and the common people on the other.

Tenochtitlan, their capital city, stood where Mexico City is today and was said by early explorers to have been five times the size of London. Human and animal sacrifices were commonplace in the hopes of guaranteeing a good harvest.

So how do the pyramids in Wisconsin tie to a civilization that came from central Mexico?

The theory behind the Aztecs being the builders of Rock Lake’s pyramids is based on the idea that the Aztec civilization actually originated in the US and eventually migrated into Mexico, taking direction from their god Huitzilopochtli, to head south until they saw an eagle on top of a cactus devouring a snake. There, they built their empire and not the other way around. This idea largely stems from a map from the Treaty of Hidalgo – one of the last times the Aztecs’ American origins were mentioned in print, which placed the ancient home of the Aztecs in the American southwest. Yet another older map suggests their origin to be the Great Salt Lake region.

Remnants of a civilization that shares many characteristics of the Aztec society and architecture are also located in Wisconsin, three miles east of Rock Lake. The location is named Aztlán, the Aztec word for their mythical homeland, which translates to “place of egrets” or “place of whiteness”. Although researchers debate the idea of Aztlán having actually been built by the Aztecs, it does put forth the idea that the civilization that built Aztlán may have migrated through the southwest US and later became the Aztecs of Mexico.
