Mandela Effect

A computer generated portrait of Nelson Mandela

The Mandela Effect is a phenomenon where a large group of people remember an event or fact differently than it actually occurred. The term originated from the false memory some people have of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s, when in reality he was released and lived until 2013. The causes of the Mandela Effect are not fully understood, but some theories suggest that it could be due to shared false memories, the power of suggestion, or the brain’s tendency to fill in gaps in incomplete memories.
