ORIGINAL REPORT / WITNESS STATEMENT CASE 26-94858

On the night of June 9, 1912, an unknown killer entered the home of Josiah Moore in the quiet town of Villisca, Iowa, and brutally murdered eight people with an axe. The victims included Josiah, his wife Sara, their four young children, and two neighborhood girls who were staying over for a slumber party. The entire town was shocked the next morning when a neighbor discovered the bodies, all found in their beds with severe head wounds. Although investigators carried out a massive search and put multiple suspects on trial over the years—including a traveling preacher and a local politician—no one was ever convicted, leaving one of America’s most famous mass murders permanently unsolved.
